Jennifer Hastings
Technology and Software Contract Attorney
Outsource Counsel founder Jennifer Hastings is a skilled corporate attorney who has worked for both large law firms and small software development companies. She uses her broad range of business expertise to serve as legal counsel for vendors in the tech industry and for companies procuring software and services from technology vendors.
Broad Experience for Technology Businesses
Jenn Hastings has twenty years of experience in commercial contracts and business law. She worked as a commercial litigation partner at a large Michigan law firm for over a decade, and after founding Outsource Counsel, she has been providing legal services to tech companies and startups since 2015. Her experience representing corporate clients in and out of the courtroom gave her a broad understanding of what it takes to grow and maintain a business in today's ever-changing economy.
It also taught Jenn that big law isn't always the best answer for small businesses. She came to understand that startups and tech companies often value a quick assessment and a clear answer over a more involved and sometimes overly time-consuming negotiation process. Outsourcing commercial contracts work to a large law firm, with the accompanying big price tag, often isn't the right choice for software vendors or for businesses looking for help with software and technology procurement.
Knowledgeable Corporate Counsel for Software Companies
After her time at a large law firm, Jenn went in-house. She has served as corporate counsel for a number of software and tech consulting companies. She developed a strong knowledge base regarding the needs of these businesses, including contract drafting and negotiation, information technology, licensing and privacy issues, intellectual property issues, and terms of use for SaaS contracts.
She also came to understand that not every company needs or can afford a full-time in-house counsel. The technology industry can be volatile, and tech companies are bought, sold, and merge every day. Start-ups often don't yet need a full time in-house counsel, and business owners would rather not overspend when hiring an attorney to handle their day to day contract needs. However, they still need someone with experience in the industry and the ability to handle these contracts quickly and efficiently. Jenn says:
"I worked in-house for a tech company for four years. I loved working in that setting because it gave me a new perspective on business. Through Outsource Counsel, I am able to bring that same in-house attention to small businesses who don’t need someone full-time. My goal is to make technology contract negotiations easy."
Armed with the knowledge of an in-house attorney and the experience of a corporate litigator, Jennifer Hastings founded Outsource Counsel to give small technology companies and savvy business owners access to a SaaS contract attorney without the hefty salary of full-time in-house counsel. Now, Jenn serves as corporate counsel for tech start-ups and small businesses through her owncompany, Outsource Counsel. She and her team provide the same comprehensive service as an in-house attorney in a way that fits a smaller company's business plan. Outsource Counsel can also supplement existing in-house legal teams for procurement and technology contract work, without the cost of adding an additional full-time employee.
No matter where in the U.S. your company is physically based, Jenn will work hard to give you the personal attention and industry knowledge of an experienced in-house technology attorney, at well below the cost of either hiring in-house counsel, or sending the work out to a traditional law firm.
